Formed by winds and ocean waves, the Oceano Dunes Recreation Area is one of the few dune areas that welcomes swimming, hiking, surfing, limited clamming and off-highway driving. Vehicles are limited to certain areas of the dunes, one mile south of the beach from Pier Ave. Camping facilities are also found in the area.

The pier was originally built in 1881 by a group of San Francisco business men, and was primarily used as a shipping point for south county agriculture. After sustaining major damage from storms in 1983, the current pier was rebuilt in 1924 and boasts 1,370 feet of boardwalk as well as several cantilevered fishing decks. Many fishing and clamming opportunities are available from the pier. Restrooms and free parking are available at the foot of the pier as well fish-cleaning stations, benches, lights, bait (primarily frozen) and tackle.
